External hard drive shows up in device manager but not explorer

I'm wondering if I can uninstall the driver in the device manager, or would that make matters worse? I can't go into the tower so if this can't be fixed could I use an external dvd/rw? The free recovery programs won't work when I have the disk plugged in to a USB drive.
